SMF data consists of more than 100 record types that provide details about things happening in the system. The records often use bits as flags so can be quite hard to decipher. There are records for recording job and step details, RACF access, TCP/IP access, CICS access, IPL information, and so forth.

Syslog is not a standard term -- do you mean the JES message log for a job, the system console log, SYSPRINT from a job, SYSOUT from a job, or something else entirely?

Hello,

Is there something in particular you are looking for?

If you explain what you are trying to accomplish (if anything - might just be for learning), someone may have a suggestion on how to proceed.
Hope this helps,

Hello,

The list is far too long to even try to present in a forum.

Simply said the syslog is what is written to the console(s). SMF is an internal recording of many more pieces of data captured at a lower level.

To be in confusion, you would have some specific doubt that you have not yet posted. . .

If you don't explain clearly where you are "stuck", we cannot provide much help :?
Hope this helps,

Comparing syslog to SMF is like comparing apples to bacon. There just is not very much similarity -- certainly not enough to create much confusion. Syslog holds job messages, started task messages, and system messages (abend error codes, tape mounts, and so forth) -- note the emphasis on messages. SMF is a system for capturing performance data (no messages) about jobs, started tasks, tapes, disks, and so forth.
