hi everyone,
am a beginner in mainframe.So can anyone tell about the need of having a data set in mainframe?

As the name should hint to you, a data set holds the data that your programs will manipulate. They may access that data through interfaces (e.g., DL/I, SQL, etc.) that make it look like the data are stored in other constructs, but those logical constructs are all instantiated by data sets.

Do you use a PC? Why do you need a file on the PC?

The same logic applies to data sets on the mainframe.
