Hello,

Many organizations use something other than idcams for performance reasons.
Hope this helps,

IDCMAS not just do "copy", it does many other things; comparing one feacture of it with EMC Snap does not sound fair.

As Dick indicates, many organisations use, sometimes, some in-house written programs as well for COPY. Copying files is not a high-CPU operation. It depends more upon the I/O and you might reduce the EXCP count by some factor by using even Sort over IDCAMS....

Personally, I'd believe, it is highly influnced by who-are-in-position-of-taking-decision when such desicions of using utilities are made...

If you are referring to the SNAPSHOT facility, then the first difference is that IDCAMS is used for a variety of things (copying files, defining VSAM files, altering GDG and file characteristics, working with catalogs, and so forth) whereas SNAPSHOT makes point-in-time backups of data sets but does none of the other things IDCAMS can do. A SNAPSHOT will be much quicker than a full backup but cannot be used away from the storage device.
