JCL Utilities

Postby gowthamgyaa » Tue Oct 02, 2012 8:19 pm

Hi everyone,
I have a doubt in JCL utilities and need your clarification, i either searched with internet, books all but i still feel confusing and i need your experience hands.
In utilities IEBGENER We can take a backup of PS TO PS , PDS TO PDS, PDS MEMBER TO PDS MEMBER, PS TO PDS AND PS TO PDS MEMBER, Whether this s correct?
Similarly in IEBCOPY we can backup with PDS MEMBER TO PDS MEMBER , PDS TO PDS ? In my Institute they told we cant use PS in IEBCOPY? whats the concept behind this?
kindly provide me details to above and also with utilities like IEBCOMPR , IEHLIST, IEHPROGM.

Have you actually read the utilities manual? The manual you need is DFSMSdfp Utilities.

Also, those are utilities not JCL utilities. JCL utilities, and there are very few of them - mainly JCL checkers, are utilities for use against JCL.

Why should we know why your institute does not allow the use of IEBCOPY? The only people who would know are those in the institute.
The problem I have is that people can explain things quickly but I can only comprehend slowly.
Regards
Nic

Hello,

In my Institute they told we cant use PS in IEBCOPY? whats the concept behind this?
IEBCOPY is the Library Copy utility and a PS is not a library. The manual Nic mentioned is available vie the "IBM Manuals" link at the top and bottom of the page.

Many utilities may be used to copy data from one file to another or from one format to another.

Is there something specific you want to do? Suggest you try it using disposable datasets and learn. If you explain where you have a doubt, post this and someone should be able to clarify.
Hope this helps,
d.sch.

Now would be a good time to read the IBM manual . . .

Once you have done this, post anything that is not clear. We will help, but we are not a manual reading service . . .
Hope this helps,

Read the manual. You will find that IEBCOPY allows you to select individual members to copy from one PDS to another PDS. I don't think your teacher has very much experience, which means your teacher may not be telling you the right things in all cases.

The two principle manuals for utility programs started using JCL are DFSMS AMS for Catalogs and DFSMSdfp Utilities for your z/OS release. The first manual discusses the use of the IDCAMS utility, which is mostly for VSAM datasets and catalogs, though the REPRO command has some ability to copy sequential datasets and members of a PDS, and is often a little more convenient to use than the IEBGENER utility discussed in DFSMSdfp Utilities.

DFSMSdfp Utilities discusses a number of small utilities that have been part of OS/360, the remote ancester of z/OS. Some functions of these utilities have been replaced by functions in IDCAMS. Most of the IEHxxxx utilities are difficult to use in modern environments and are rarely used any more for that reason. Other IEHxxxx utilities are for the exclusive use of system programmers, and beginners should not contemplate their use.

Most mature shops have a number of utility programs for functions in their environment, which, of course, we cannot discuss here.

I echo Mr. Sample's opinion about the knowledge and qualifications of your instructor.
