JVM server (Liberty) communicating with COBOL CICS

Hello,
how does communication with a JVM server in a cics region work? My understanding, because of the word server, was that there has to be some sort of network interaction.
But I guess that since the JVM server and the COBOL CICS programs should be in the same cics region that COBOBL CICS programs can invoke Java programs (running on the JVM server) via some sort of CICS APIs?
