it is really, really sad to see a company IT managed by incompetent morons

somebody at the higher floors should be concerned about You wasting time on a STUPID requirement

Oh, someone got offended ... :)
though I humbly take that 'incompetent moron' as of now... but I must say your second statement is baseless since my company is
at GROUND FLOOR only :D

the only entitie that got offended here is good IT practices

Information Technology is made of a lowly technicalities and of good practices
You ( as most of the people asking here ) seem concerned only about the technicalities rather than about the good practices
( and wasting time on an unreasonable requirement is not a good practice )

use Your neurons please and ...explain to everybody hanging around here
what is the added valued of You spending time writing an easytrieve application as compared to spending a few millionths of a few cpu resources searching a few more members

and the whole jcl stream could have been already promoted to production by now

Appreciate your concern about good IT practices,
but let me re-re-phrase my need, the thing is I needed the 'string' given in SYSIN which is not found in any of the members of PDS containing 1000's members,
that's why I required a code that stops after the first match for each string, and as I already mentioned I simply cannot use this in Production env.

also I needed this code to search for my own purpose not to promote anywhere... :)
