Data Set sorting on 3.4 (Dslist)

Hi there buddies!

So, i'd like to ask if there is a way to sort the data set listing on 3.4 (Dslist utility), so they show up in order of data/creation time and not based on their nomenclature...

Let me clarify this... I have like 700+ sequential data sets and they're named like: DS###.LLQ, where ### are numbers. Instead of showing them from the lowest to the highest ### value, I'd like them to show up based on the creation date/time of creation... Is that possible?

Thanks in advance!! :D

this kind of question usually find the fastest answer in the manuals
or by lurking/wandering in the ISPF help panels!

Hello,

But here is a hint. . . .

The answer is actually in the question. . . .

what bothers me really is the complete lack of imagination. curiosity, basic learning skills ...(**)
it should cost exactly nothing to type in the command line the stupid command SORT and see what happens
but .... we cannot pretend that :D

and it would follow also follow the ergonomics of ISPF
input info is provided thru panels and <commands> entered in the command line and line commands
since in the 3.4 there is a comand line let' see what happens when typing something

I just went trhu the path to be sure ( even if I know I always double check before posting )
go to option 3.4 and get an arbitrary dataset list
into the command line enter some arbitrary chars
... a message invalid command is diplayed in the short message area ( upper right corner of the screen )
...Invalid command
... pf1 ( first time ) a long message is displayed on the second line or a message box ( depending on ISPF setup )
...The command entered is not valid for the Data Set List Utility.
...pf1 ( second time ) guess what ... a list of the valid commands will be displayed starting with
You can use the following commands from the Command line after the data set
list is displayed:
APPEND  - Appends a personal list or data set level to a DSLIST.
CONFIRM - Confirms data set delete requests (by confirmation panel).
DSLSET  - Displays the data set list settings panel.
EXCLUDE - Excludes a line containing a string within the data set name.
FIND    - Finds a string within the data set name.
LOCATE  - Locates an entry in the list based upon sorted order.
MEMBER  - Searches all partitioned data sets in the list for a member name
or pattern.

.. rest skipped to give the TS the opportunity of findinng out by himsel

(**) and that' s what higher education should give basically but looks like everywhere is dramatically failing

Hi Enrico,

From what i can see, the people who come to the forum looking for info either want to learn or they really want someone to do their work for them.

I enjoy going to considerable length to help someone learn. I lose patience with the ones who beileve they are entitled to have others actually do their work. I also sometimes have trouble determining who are actually students and those that are merely lazy. Part of this is our first language differences.

This topic appeared (at least to me) as looking to learn.

Sometimes it is difficult to relate to the days when we didn't know stuff. Of course none of this existed when i/we started :)

It makes quite a difference being part of the beginning. . .

Have a great rest of the weekend,

d

So, thanks for the answer guys...

Let me just put some things straight here:

Sure, my plan was to take a look at the manuals as soon as I got home, I was accessing the forums and the z/OS thru my mobile phone while trying to sort the data sets (see, it's 1am here and I just arrived, busy day >_>). It wasn't my intention to actually "paste the problem here and crawl begging for someone to do my work". I appreciate your help, thanks!

You see, I've been working with mainframes (mainly z/OS) for like a year in a trainee position. I'm not saying I'm an expert already (lol, i still need to go thru a loooooong way :P) but I know how to manage myself there, I would eventually find out - as soon as I were able to get home and try to find, if I hadn't found out the answer here...

Since I first had my 1st contact with this 'world', i've been using the forums to learn everytime I needed something, it's a good way for students (like me) to look for references (see, LOOK FOR REFERENCES, not complete solutions)...

Well, not making this too big, I managed to filter the DS's, thanks once again for the help!

Have a good night and an explendid weekend ;)

See Enrico, if you're having deep or serious personal problems that are affecting your life, the forums aren't the right place to express and unload all your inner frustration.

People are here seeking help and learning, even though some (maybe a lot) of them don't want to learn how to fish, but have the fish caught instead, we try to help them how we can.

This type of behavior that you are expressing is trully what disencourages people to seek learning in new technologies and areas because a lot of "experienced" people aren't helpful with their learning.

Best regards,

Hello,

This type of behavior that you are expressing is trully what disencourages people to seek learning in new technologies and areas because a lot of "experienced" people aren't helpful with their learning.
The only ones discouraged are most likely the ones who should choose an different profession. . .

People are here seeking help and learning, even though some (maybe a lot) of them don't want to learn how to fish, but have the fish caught instead, we try to help them how we can.
Many of us are willing to help new (or even not so new) people learn. Most of us are not willing to spoon-feed them. Because if we do, we are doing them a dis-service. It is far more appropriate (and valuable) to provide information that will help someone implement their own solution rather than automatically post solutions. And there are a lot of "solutions" posted that are simply wrong. . . Causing even bigger confusion/problems.

If we post "how to", many can benefit that come to the forum and search for answers before posting. We have far more "views" than we have posts.
