Hi I have a volume in F-NRD status and I am trying to reformat it but it keeps asking for the device which is offile.
Can some one please let me know. I tried varying it offline again but to no use.

What command are you using to vary the volume offline?

If the volume is shared between LPAR's, you would have to issue vary ucbb, offline, all to get it offline to every LPAR.

So what happened when you put "force" before "all"?

And while I'm thinking about it, are you running JES2 or JES3? When using the VARY command, the difference is extremely important.

It is JES2 using RACF or ZEKE.

Hello Bad man!
If after V ucbb,OFFLINE you are receiving IEF524I ucbb, VOLUME PRDxxx PENDING OFFLINE – you should issue d ios, config to see the name of your sys1.iodfxx – then go with HC for sys1.iodfxx – 1 (view) – 5 (I/O device) - /ucbb – 8 (view) – etc. until view the parameter OFFLINE YES or NO for this ucbb. The reason is here – if your ucbb is OFFLINE NO, it means that during IPL it is set always to ONLINE. Ask your IPL support to change this parameter to parameter OFFLINE YES and reIPL. Then you will have V ucbb,OFFLINE OK.
Hope this will help!

ohhhh Man...I had coded in MY jcl a DD statement ponitng to a VOLSER=XXXXXX and that was the problem got rid of the DD as t was not needed and the DASD was reformatted eventhough the volume was F-NRD on some Lpar's.

Also I tried hitting offline after going to each Lpar but the volume remained in F-NRD...
