Back in the good old days, processors were much slower and some jobs would run for days. Checkpoints allowed you to cancel a job and restart later at the previous checkpoint. The files would reposition themselves and the program resumes processing. Checkpoints would be timed to occur every few hours.

Hello,

In the jobs Bill mentions, the program would determine how long it had been running since the last checkpoint. If the specified amount of time had elapsed, a new checkpoint was issued.

Another way ckeckpoints are used is at the end of a logical "unit of work" (LUW).

The reason for checkpoints is usually to support recovery/restart.
