No, I'm serious .. We've hundred's of easytrieve programs run on daily basis in production. This causes significant payment for easytrieve licensing cost. In order to avoid this cost, we're looking to convert easytrieve programs to open source technologies..

Do they include "reports", or just processing of files? Is the processing of files complex? Are many of the programs big?

One thing that I know people do is use an existing tool to convert Easytrieve to COBOL, and then run the COBOL. The CA License is no longer needed. The Easytrieve sources can be maintained (they'll look much nicer than the COBOL) but never use EZTPA00.

I never heard of this kind of request. "hundred's of easytrieve programs". If this can be done it would probably take 18-month to 2-years! Then what happens to the Easytrieve developers? Trained to be Jave developer? Strange request.

Hello and welcome to the forum,

Is there someone in your organization who is Very Good with both Easytrieve and Java?

Each has a completely different way to operate.

As far as cost savings - Easytrieve must be licensed as long as Any process uses it.
How will the effort to convert be funded?
How much "real" work will not be done because resources are involved in the conversion?
Depending on what data sources are used, there may be "opportunities" accessing the same data.
Will the Java platform be able to perform as well as needed?

These questions do not need a reply here, just considered by those who want to remove Easytrieve.

At a minimum, you'll need someone who knows both Easytrieve and Java, plus whatever language(s) in which you decide to write the tool. Do you have anyone with those skills? If not, what are you willing to pay? (Hint: people with those skills won't even spit on you for Rs 250/hour).
