Hi,

In our shop we have a task of migrating the Z800 datas to Z9 lpar(already created). What are the pre-requisite that we need to make sure before proceeding with Migration. Your advice in this would be highly helpful.

I'm not sure you're actually asking anything here. Any data available on a z800 would be available on a z9 BC -- there's no conversions involved -- as long as the devices are available on both machines.

Apology to be more precise. In our shop Z800 machine has many racf groups, databases , tablespaces etc. The same level of groups, Databases and Tablespaces are not available at Z9(test Lpar). For the Z800 we are using the tape unit 680 and for the Z9 we are using 890 tape units. Is it feasible to restore all the Z800 above informations into Z9. Main objective of migration is to decommission the Z800 machine and to make Z9 a development LPAR. Please advice.

Hello,

I am still not clear on why there is a problem/opportunity. . .

For the Z800 we are using the tape unit 680 and for the Z9 we are using 890 tape units.
Are these UCB addresses or tape drive models?

The same level of groups, Databases and Tablespaces are not available at Z9(test Lpar).
If these are not migrated by some automated processes, they will all have to be re-entered.

Have you talked with the IBM people who should be involved with this "switch"?

Catalog migration and RACF database backup / restore are both straightforward (unless your catalog has errors). Depending upon the site, DASD may be shared in which case there is no migration needed -- the DASD will be available on both machines. As long as the tape drives are compatible, there may be a requirement to move some tapes from machine to machine, or they may need to be copied -- the vendor doing the upgrade should be able to help determine which is needed and recommend an approach.

Robert,

Here the big challenge is that Z800 and Z900 DASD's are not shared.

Just behave as if in a DR situation!
dump everything, restore everything!

split the process in two parts
migrate the SYSTEM stuff first
migrate the APPLICATION stuff after that

if the zOS level is the right one, all the supporting PTFS/APARS have been applied
a quick and dirty DUMP(ALL)/RESTORE(ALL) is the way to go

if the only issue is the RACF definition
look at the racf manuals for the utilities to do the migration/merge
