Hi,

We have a requirement to zip some very large datasets (approx 20GB).

I have looked at a few offerings out there (GZIP, ZIP/390 and PKZIP).

Currently operating under z/OS v1.7

Would appreciate any general advice what the best product would be to use.

Cheers,
Aaron

Hello,

"Best" would depend on your more specific requirement(s).

Are you going to transfer them to some other platform to be "unzipped" and used? How often do you believe they will be used after then are compressed?

Is your dasd sms-managed (you may need to talk with your storage management people)?

Hi Dick,

We will be transferring the data via FTP to another IBM mainframe. This process will run about 4 times a year. The data won't be used again on our side, except to look at the data to try and resolve any issues or possible bugs. The data will unzpped on the other side and loaded to a DB2 database, after that I don't think it will be used again.

I'll have to find out what "sms-managed" means.

Aaron

Hello,

If this is limited use and will go from one mainframe to another, look at TRSMAIN (also known as TERSE).

This is probably already installed on both mainframes, so you should have no additonal expense/installation.
