PC as twinax terminal

Postby philip.s » Tue Jan 26, 2010 2:11 am

Hi Guys

I now have a IBM system 5362, but no terminal. I live in South Africa, and it seems to be impossible to find one.
I see terminals are available on ebay, but shipping is a few times more expensive than the terminal.

Do you have any ideas about setting up a pc as a twinax terminal? ( Perhaps on a tcp/ip lan )

Hello and welcome to the forum,

What is the device/model you are looking for?

How many different terminal types does that system support?

Does the system support telnet?
Hope this helps,
d.sch.

System 36 supported IBM 5251 type terminals -- Google IBM 5251 emulator and there are some hits -- I didn't check to see if any will work with a System 36 but presumably they will.

Thank you, but what should I use to connect the twinax cable to my modern network and/or system (pc) .
Do you know where I could buy something like that ?

Thanks a million

Googling tcp/ip system 36 led me to http://www.twindata.com/compumaster/twinet.htm which allows a twinax connection to an Ethernet network -- your PC would connect via the usual Ethernet connection while the System 36 is connected to the gateway with twinax. You'll have to contact the vendor to get pricing information and so forth.
