Talk to your site support group. Depending upon the site, the products available, the size of the file, and system parameters -- it may or may not be possible for the data set to be edited. In any case, only your site support group can provide you with the information and assistance to determine whether or not your particular file may be edited.

Hello,

There is no good reason to edit a huge file online. . .

Depending on what you need to "edit" in the file, suggest you consider using your sort product as this will outperform "edit".

Also, if this is a real (production) data file, suggest you make sure there is an audit trail of what was changed.
Hope this helps,

Good question. What are you trying to change in the data? It may be more appropriate to come up with another editing process for it.

In my shop, we can use FileManager to edit large datasets, but it does "window" them which can get tricky. It basically loads all the records it can at once, then lets you work with them.

I'd bet you a small coffee though that you'd be better off doing it in batch, using a tool designed for the job.

Another possible option is the line mode TSO EDIT command.
