Does anyone know what this means? It is as simple as upgrading the firmware on the DASD controller or something larger?

it depends on the context...
could be just smoke or it could describe the <serioius> task of bringing the dasd farm up to the current state of art

Hello,

Where did you see this? What brought this to your attention?

Is this not an AS/400, rather than a System z, reference?

I am doing some research into some cycle efficiencies but one of the hardware guys wants us to back off for now because there is a "IBM DASD Technology Refresh" coming up.

This is for a Z196 box.

Hmmm. Well, I've never seen the phrase "DASD technology refresh" except in the context of an AS/400, so I guess I'm not going to be of help here.

Hello,

because there is a "IBM DASD Technology Refresh" coming up.
Possibly the "hardware guys" will explain just What is coming up (i.e. some details).

Working in Design and Build some time back we've used this phrase to describe a new DASD subsystem(s) to replace the existing subsystem(s), I've seen where in some contracts the vendor is responible for the data migration (one subsys to the other), some folks like to do the migration themselves, but either way there's hardware and gen work that will need to be done
