Hi...

I joined for Mainframe course in Bangalore. I want to install the mainframe setup in my Laptop. But the institute people are asking me to pay 10000Rs more than the course for the installation..

I found that we can install & work with Mainframe for free, in this post, career-guidance/topic1657.html

Can anyone Please explain how to install it for Windows XP ( with http://www.hercules-390.org/).
And what are all the things we should download for the installation..

Please describe in a STEP BY STEP MANNER. (If possible, With SOME SCREENSHOTS)
Please......................................................

First, why are you not asking the Hercules web site for this type of assistance? While there are people with Hercules installed here, this is not a Hercules support forum.

Second, once you have Hercules installed you have a mainframe emulator. You do not have a functional mainframe unless and until you install an operating system onto Hercules.

Third, the Hercules web site has links to an MVS 3.8 operating system that can be installed. Although MVS 3.8 is well over 20 years old at this point, it is permitted as MVS 3.8 was not copyrighted. Any recent IBM operating system version (such as z/OS) is copyrighted and cannot be legally installed onto Hercules. For learning JCL and so forth, MVS 3.8 is close enough to current operating systems to be a good learning platform.

Thanks Mr.Robert.
And I apologize for mentioning Hercules.

Can you please tell, is there any other possibility to install Mainframe to my laptop?

Yes. Become an IBM Partner Developer (or whatever they're calling it these days), and IBM will sell you a laptop with z/OS installed. The price runs about 20,000 U.S. dollars I understand. This is the only legal way to get a valid copy of z/OS on any PC platform.

Hello,

If you know very little about the mainframe, i believe it will take a lot of time and effort to get Hercules and MVS installed and running successfully.

Most people do not intuitively understand there is a completely different philosophy about installing/operating a mainframe instead of some Win-based, Linux, or Ubuntu system. All of these "little box systems" are meant to be installed/used by people with little or no experience. This is not true by design for the mainframe.

For someone who doesn't have access to a mainframe system, or new to this area, I suggest trying the (MVS Turnkey System) under Hercules

or he could try VM/370 or DOS/VS which are all available (they are too old, but they are indeed a very good thing to start with)
