Hello and welcome to the forum,

What in particular are you interested in? Do you intend to become a programmer or work in some other area?

You might look here for the Hercules pc-loadable mainframe emulator:
http://www.hercules-390.org/
Hercules will you to run "mainframe things" on your pc, but it typically requires a rather thorough understanding of the IBM mainframe environment.

Depending on your interest, i'd suggest looking for an education center near your location and enroll there for some training.

Keep in mind that systems like Linux, and Windows are meant to be "run out of the box" (i.e. anyone can install and run them). This is not the case with the mainframe. . .

You could also look for the IBM's Master the Mainframe Contest, they hold it every year (in june/august), keep a look at their website, here's the direct link:

https://www-304.ibm.com/jct09002c/us/en ... ntest.html

It's a gret opportunity to learn at home, taking me as an example, when I started (sep/2008) I knew nothing about mainframes and nowadays (mar/2009) I'm working at IBM as a z/OS student intern.

So, good luck, feel free to ask your questions! ;)

Hello,

I believe you need to decide where you want to begin. What in particular is your interest? Once you have learned some the mainframe environment, what would you like to do for a career?

Is there technical training avaiable near where you are (or will be). Enrolling in some mainframe training would be a good "jump start". There would already be some groundwork laid and there would be an instructor or some tutor or mentor available to talk with.

You might look at this link and consider buying the cd pack.
http://www.mainframesindia.com/

Good luck and someone will be here if you have questions :)

Hello and welcome to the forum,

Did you go to the Hercules site? This is the first info on their home page:
Hercules is an open source software implementation of the mainframe System/370 and ESA/390 architectures, in addition to the new 64-bit z/Architecture. Hercules runs under Linux, Windows (98, NT, 2000, and XP), Solaris, FreeBSD, and Mac OS X (10.3 and later).

Of some importance is the list of Windows operating systems - which does not include 7 . . .

If you run your Win7 system in "XP Mode", it might but work, but i don't know anyone who has tried this.
