Have you read other posts and replies in this section? Considering most financial work is done on mainframes it would require the total disintegration of the world's economies to kill off the mainframe the installed processing power of which is increasing year-on-year.

Well, if you did not understand that then you should steer clear of mainframes.

The IBM mainframe in the form of the System/360 architecture and its successors has been around almost 50 years. There is almost no chance that the mainframe will cease to be used anytime in the next 20 to 30 years. The mainframe is evolving -- today, you can use java, C, C++, Perl, HTML, and XML on the mainframe instead of COBOL, FORTRAN, PL/I -- but it has been doing that all along. It is not glamorous and exciting like some of the new technologies, but unlike them it has been proven over the long run to be useful and effective. Your career is under your control, but before you turn away from the mainframe look at IBM's share price on Wall Street and ask yourself why, if as your friends say the mainframe is going away, doesn't IBM's stock price drop towards zero since IBM is so closely associated with mainframes?
