VB 6 To Mainframes

VB 6 To Mainframes

Postby johndavis » Mon May 09, 2011 6:29 am

Hi !

I am a beginner to Mainframes. I am in training now. I was asked this question in one of the companies where I attended and I was unable to answer them convincingly.

Why VB 6 to Mainframes ?

I am posting this question so that it might be helpful for others as of now and for me in the future. How to answer the above question convincingly ?

Thanks,
John Davis

Why not VB 6 to mainframes?

Actually -- what is meant by the question, first? Are you asking why use VB 6 to interact with mainframes? Are you talking about using VB 6 on a mainframe (not likely)? Are you talking about why use VB 6 when mainframes are around? Are you talking about why are mainframes still around when VB 6 is here? There's a lot of ways to interpret the bare-bones question, so the answer really depends upon the meaning of the question.

Hi !

Sorry for making my question not clear.

I have worked in VB 6. I am a beginner to Mainframes.

Why you had moved from working in VB 6 to Mainframes ?

Thanks

The main use of VB is on PCs, where you have potentially millions of clients with, usually, reasonably small amounts of data. With GUI and all that sort of stuff.

Why move from that sort of environment to mainframes, large amounts of data, no GUI, much smaller number of potential clients.

Why move from PCs to mainframes when they are such different beasts? No one else can answer that for your, convincingly.

Because every 3-year old can create VB applications, mainframes are far more of a challenge.

Would not YOUR answer to the question depend upon YOUR reasons for making the change? If you cannot yet give a convincing answer to that question, either you need to think long and hard about why you want to make the change, or you need to go back to VB 6 coding. Nobody else can provide as good as answer to that question as you can (since we have no idea what your thought process was to begin the change), but it is a questino you need to spend time thinking about, preferably before your next interview.
