A shop is a place of work - be it a restaurant, a retail outlet, a workshop etc. We do not refer to the mainframe as the shop but the place of work.
The problem I have is that people can explain things quickly but I can only comprehend slowly.

Hello,

We do not refer to the mainframe as the shop but the place of work.
Not true for everyone/everyplace. . .

More than half of the places i've supported (way over 100) call their IT "place of work" their shop. If there are multiple sets of workers (say segregated by type of work) there are multiple IT "shops" within the organization..
Hope this helps,
d.sch.

Yes, but it is still the building/whatever that is the shop - not the mainframe as suggested in the question.

Hello,

not the mainframe as suggested in the question
Perceptions vary. . .

You chose "the machine" - i read "the organization".

thank you for your answers very helpful
You're welcome - good luck. :)
