Hi

I have a requirement to connect to oracle database from mainframe(z/os).I read about an option called Pro*Cobol .I want to know if Pro* Cobol supports z/os and if it is possible to connect to oracle from z/os batch environment. From what I read ,I understood that it is for z/linux and not z/os.

wouldn' t it be faster to ask the company who makes pro cobol ??? ( oracle in this case )

and ... by the way
when googling with pro cobol zos the first link returned gave quite a bit of info about the whole thing
( the first link for me... Your mileage might vary )

Hi..
I did google for Pro*Cobol. But from what I understood,it is available only for z/linux and not for z/os.I could not find any proper documents specifying the process to access oracle from z/os batch environment. Also, I could not find any information regarding the JCLs required,link-edit process ,how to install Pro*cobol in z/os etc.I also doubt if it is an open-source product.I thought posting the query in this forum might give me some clarity of information.

pro COBOL is from ORACLE, asking ORACLE would be the fastest way of getting an answer,
and probably also posting to one of the ORACLE Forums

asking for opinions on the overall system architecture will result in a waste of time for everybody ...
WE DO NOT BELONG TO YOUR ORGANIZATION,
WE DO NOT KNOW THE SYSTEM SETUP,
WE DO NOT KNOW
...
WE DO NOT KNOW

so suggesting to access a remote ORACLE system using DB2 DRDA would probably result in a waste of time

what does YOUR database support people have to say on the subject

anyway You/Your support might try googling with
ibm redbooks db2 oracle drda ddf

Hi

I tried posting in an ORACLE forum. But I did not get any proper information whether ORACLE on another platform can be accessed from z/os batch environment.

Someone in our organisation has, presumably, ascertained that it is possible to do what you want. You should be speaking to the person who gave you the assignment and they should provide you with all that you need to know to carry out your part of the project. Your systems people would be tasked with installing any extra software that is required.

You should also remember that ...
answering on a forum is on

- voluntary base
- our ( people who answer ) time
- interest of the topic
- right addressee of the question (*)
- ... ...

THERE IS NO COMMITMENT TO ANSWER
THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY EXPECTATION TO RECEIVE AN ANSWER

(*)
in this case the people to be involved are the DATA BASE ( ORACLE and DB2 ) support people
they are the people involved in making the appropriate system customization and support the environment
and provide guidance and testing support

and ORACLE ( the provider ) support itself
