Would depend entirely on the context.

I'm guess you are after the difference between "an enhancement" and "an upgrade". Arguably the upgrade might be a bigger task than an enhancement, but these are not "defined" technical terms, so no need to indicate any difference in themselves.

I would say an enhancement is an additional function or an expansion of an already present function.
An upgrade would mean to me that you are raising the version or release level of a product, like for a newer version of z/OS, etc.

Thanks to both of you..

Mongan-- A newer version would have additional features and that would be refered to as Enhancement right?

This is not something you can nail down. The words/phrases have do specific technical meaning, could be used interchageably, but generally would be as Mongan has presented, yet you could certainly argue that an upgrade enhances a product, or an enhancement upgrades a product.

Why is this question in the Cobol forum anyway?

Well, in that case "enhancement" is probably used by management to make the work seem more interesting (until you start on it...).

It can be interesting. Don't change anything without the spec saying so. If there is something you feel needs changing, go back to the spec-writer and find out.

Hello,

Until recently, upgradation was not an standard (acceptable) term. From a dictionary
1.(computing, nonstandard, proscribed, chiefly India) Upgrade; upgrading.

Enhancements and Upgrades depend on the author of the document/spec.

In my experience, things are enhanced by changing or adding functionality. Especially in vendor provided/supported products. When an organization decides to move from an older version/release of a product, it is upgraded to the newer version/release provided by the vendor.

Within an organization, enhancements are usually done in a test/development environment. When this is ready to promote, the Productoin environment is upgraded.
