Mainframe languages

Hi everyone,
I need to know in which category of language mainframe programming's comes under,
I m asking in such a sense that COBOL Is a Programming language and JCL is a scripting language.
Similar to above i need to know it for CICS , VSAM , TSO/ISPF.

It surprises me when JCL is described as a "scripting language". Don't let the "L" confuse you, I don't think it is really any sort of "programming language". It has a "syntax" in which sense it might be described as a Language, but what do you "write" in it?

None of CICS, VSAM or TSO/ISPF are languages themselves.

If you tell us why you want/need to know this there will be better suggestions.

In only the broadest of contexts could JCL be considered a "scripting language" since it does not support loops, for example.

VSAM is a file access method.

CICS and TSO are interfaces between the computer and the user and cannot be considered languages. ISPF is an application that runs under TSO and again is not a language but more of an interface.

Hi Billyboyo,
I just need to write mainframe skills in my resume. I thought of writing it much accurately so that it would gain me extra preference, that's the only reason.

Do not put things on your CV/Resume that you do not know about. It is called lying and will get you sacked if caught - and you will be as you know next to nothing, comparatively speaking. You are a learner - employers will know that and will appreciate your honesty. A liar will be regarded as untrustworthy and be thrown out. Having been thrown out it will be more difficult to get the next job - unless you lie and then it starts all over again.

If you want something on your CV, make sure you know how to use it and make sure you know what it is. If you put down TSO as a "language" then you're not going to have something which is useful.

As a beginner, you could put down "some experience of TSO... etc" as no-one will expect you to be an expert. But you will still need to know what they are, and what they are used for.

I just want to prepare my resume , i m not going to attend any interview until i got prepared in the content's which i have added up in resume, so that's y i asked u , I had written
Languages as : COBOL , JCL.
Softwares as : CICS, TSO/ISPF, VSAM
Database server: DB2.

whether my technical specification with Mainframe is right?

JCL is not a lang i suppose [sorry if iam wrong].

The "Skills Profile" section of my own CV/résumé reads:

Application Development Tools: Xpediter, File-AID
Databases / DB Tools: IMS/DB, VSAM, DB2
Hardware: IBM mainframes, IBM PC and compatibles
Operating Systems: OS/MVS, CMS, MS DOS, Windows
Programming Languages: C, C++, COBOL, PL/1, SQL, REXX
Other: ISPF, MVS JCL

so you might just put JCL under "other", as I have.
