Regarding Natural/Adabas

Hi all,

I have completed my training in COBOL,JCL,CICS,DB2 . After that I have completed my training in NATURAL/ADABAS.
Now I have been alloted to project in Natural/Adabas where I will have to do production support.

So I just want to ask about its scope and also will it be possible for me to switch to COBOL/CICS/DB2 project in other company, after having 1-2 yrs experience here?

Thanks in advance..

Hello prabhat and welcome to the forums,

will it be possible for me to switch to COBOL/CICS/DB2 project in other company, after having 1-2 yrs experience here
Possibly. No one here can really say. It will largely depend on how you develop over the next 2 years or so. I'd suggest not "closing" any doors.

Hi dick scherrer,

Thanks for your suggestion. Also I didn't get your line '' I'd suggest not "closing" any doors. '' Please explain this to me.

Thanks.

From your question it appeared that you were asking if in 1-2 years you might move from Adabas/Natural to DB2/COBOL. My comment was a suggestion that you not make that decision just yet.

Depending on how the market is in your area then, there may be more opportunities in one technology or the other.

It will surely not hurt if you become familiar with both.

Hello dick scherrer,
Thanks for your suggestion. From your suggestion I can conclude that '' I am able to switch to COBOL/DB2 project from NATURAL/ADABAS project ,if I am familiar with both ,irrespective of whether I have done COBOL/DB2 project or not ''
Correct me if I am wrong in taking conclusion of your suggestion.

Thanks.

Hello prabhat,

irrespective of whether I have done COBOL/DB2 project or not
This would depend on how well you could sell yourself to a db2/cobol interviewer. I'm sure an interviewer would prefer some amount of experience, but if you demonstrate sufficient knowledge and you have some other mainframe programming/database experience, you may be able to move on to cobol/db2 without being on an actual project.

This is why i encourage you to become more familiar with those disciplines. It might mean spending some of your own time "practicing" if your system has db2 installed and you can get permission to work on training exercises.
