remember also that in some countries for <certain> applications the precision is dictated by the law

Also further, done a bit of checking. The CUSIP file, which as far as I'm aware can hold a price for any known financial instrument in the world, has eight decimal places available. You might have two bytes for your number of decimal places, but I can't imagine the electron-pattern (I have absolutely no idea if this is even close to how it really works, by the tway) ever getting disturbed for the first of them.
