MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) was first released about 1974 for System/370 machines. It evolved over time into extended architecture as the hardware evolved. Eventually it became part of OS/390, and then z/OS (which is one of IBM's latest mainframe operating system). Many of the same utilities and facilities of MVS are still available in z/OS today.
