Repeating:
needed to specify OLD to not get a message.

The default is NEW, so you get a 'duplicate data set' message.

Cheers Pedro but I'm confused - you mean a DISP of OLD ?!
I am setting up a temporary dataset in VIO ? RTDDN(EDD) RTDSN(EDS) or something.
It's changed in my sample as I have a working example when I specify a BLKSIZE of 99999 for FB 80, I get s99msg. loaded!
I don't think that OLD is valid in this case ? :D

It seemed like you were looking for -any- example that got a message. My example was:
ZZ =  BPXWDYN("ALLOC FI(TEMP1) DSN("dsn")     REUSE")
say  zz s99msg.0
