One of the major problems is if the tape is virtual or real. If the tape is real then the problems can be resolved as described above.

If the tape is virtual, in many sites the header information is deleted from the VTS at volume uncatalog / expiry time and once that info is lost it is unfortunately good night Vienna

Your solution will work as long as the tape has not been reused. Once the tape has been written on again, there's no way to recover the data. As long as the tape is physical, and nothing has written to it, and the data set is not a multi-volume data set, then your approach would allow you to recover the data set(s) on the tape.

Thanks Guys I didnt knew this difference between Virtual and Real Tape...howevevr usually when we backup disks we usually have atleast one physical copy..
